Modifying child custody plans: The Jolie-Pitt case

Parents in Massachusetts and elsewhere who are going through the divorce process may find figuring out what to do with the children harder than they expected. Child custody plans can help or hurt parental-child bonds. A prime example of this would be the Jolie-Pitt divorce case.

According to a recent report, Ms. Jolie has been the primary physical custody holder of the couple’s six children. Mr. Pitt has his visitation time, but it would seem he feels the current custody arrangement is not working nor in the best interest of his children. This custody issue was just heard in court, and it would seem that a judge agrees that the current plan makes it difficult for Pitt to have healthy relationships with his children.

While there certainly are reasons that sole custody options still exist, many family courts across the country are more willing to grant shared custody, as doing so is thought to better serve the family as a whole. In the Jolie-Pitt case, this recent request by Pitt to have more time resulted in the former couple agreeing to a shared custody arrangement — at least for the summer. Only time will tell if this will become a permanent change.

Parents in Massachusetts who feel they are getting the short end of the stick — so to speak — when it comes to their child custody arrangements may seek to have the orders modified. There are never any guarantees that such a request will be granted, but it is worth trying if it is thought to be in the best interests of the children. An experienced family law attorney may be able to assist those individuals who think they have a case for custody adjustment.
