TV and movie actor Jane Lynch, more recently known for her comic part on the series “Glee,” recently finalized her divorce from her wife of three and one-half years; both parties cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the termination of their marriage. The same-sex spouses’ divorce was finalized January 8 when the pair reached a financial settlement. Lynch and her spouse, a child psychologist, married in Massachusetts in 2010 before moving to Los Angeles. The couple had met at a fundraising function in 2009.

Lynch’s ex-wife had requested almost $94,000 in monthly spousal support to support the lifestyle to which she was accustomed. She will apparently receive less than what she sought, possibly because her line of work is lucrative, although the amount has not been disclosed.

Lynch will keep the couple’s marital home in Los Angeles. The couple did not draft a prenuptial agreement before their marriage but amicably split last July, which allowed them to spend the holidays together.

Massachusetts is one of 17 states that allow same-sex marriage. Same-sex couples can also divorce in the state and face the same divorce issues that heterosexual couples do, including child custody, child support, spousal support and property division.

In this case, the couple’s amicable split led to a fair divorce settlement. Such results are possible when both parties listen to one another and fully understand each other’s needs and wants. When couples view divorce as a battle to be won, the outcome is very often fraught with anger and resentments that last for years.

In Massachusetts, same-sex couples who face marital disputes and related concerns might want to discuss their cases with a legal professional. An experienced and qualified attorney can discuss various options available for same-sex spouses, allowing them to choose the course of action that is best for their situation.
